Toronto - Overdose Response Training - 6:00 PM

Thu Nov 18 (6:00 pm - 9:00 pm)

Peer Support Responder is designed to bring training to “peers” in high-risk settings that will give them the knowledge, skills, and supplies to provide lifesaving care while protecting themselves. This training will empower peers to monitor people who are using.  It will also help to destigmatize people who use drugs, creating opportunities for people NOT to use alone.

Each responder will receive a Red Cross emergency response backpack that includes a Bag-Valve Mask with HEPA filter, hard-case pocket mask, mini-first aid kit, and PPE (KN95 mask, gloves, gown, face shield, pocket mask, eye protection).

Who is this course for?:

We recommend Peer Support Responder training for those who are most likely to encounter, witness, or experience opioid poisoning. If this does not apply to you then we would ask that you do not sign up for this course as spaces are limited.

Types of Peer Support Responders may include outreach workers or emergency response teams of volunteers in a high-risk apartment building, complex, neighbourhood, or community housing. It can also be an individual (family member, friend, peer, neighbour, resident) who may be acting as a “monitor” for someone who is using drugs. They may also be individuals who use drugs themselves and have agreed to take turns with their peers to monitor each other.

What do I need to bring to the course?:

Please make sure you are wearing a mask to the course in line with COVID-19 safety protocols, hand sanitiser will be available at the course. You will be asked to remove your shoes in the classroom so you may prefer to bring socks or indoor shoes to change in to. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing.

There is no charge for this course or emergency response backpack you will receive, but we do ask that you will be open to complete a short survey and follow-ups after this course. We are hoping to collect data on this Peer Support Responder initiative as an evidence-based practice so this project can be expanded and supported.

We are sorry but registration for this event is now closed.

Please contact us if you would like to know if spaces are still available.
