Overall, the Instructor Development process is broken down into three steps:

Step 1: Evaluate skills and check prerequisites

Candidate must be a certified Instructor and have successfully performed the required skills according to the skill sheets.

Step 2: Fundamentals of Instruction

Consists of both an online and a classroom component, where they apply the fundamentals of instruction alongside an Instructor Trainer. This segment of their development will focus on the role of an Instructor (using a learner-centered approach to first aid education) and considers both educational principles and best practice. It will also consider the responsibilities of an Instructor as a representative of the Canadian Red Cross when preparing for a course, while teaching a course, and following a course. This step includes knowledge and application focused lessons (including the opportunity to complete microteaching segments with their peers).

- Online: 5 hours, self-paced (THE ONLINE LEARNING CAN BE FOUND ON THE MY RED CROSS WEBSITE )
- Classroom ratio: Minimum 4 candidates, Maximum 8 candidates (DAY 1 / DAY 2)
- Classroom: 1 day (7h 0m teaching time)
- The focus is broad - not applicable to any discipline
- No separate re-certification, recertifies along with FA instructor certification

Step 3: Certification

Once candidates have completed steps one and two, they are certified as a Teaching Experience Supervisor. This certification remains current as long as their Instructor certification is current.
